An action-packed return to football from Newcastle Benfield saw them triumph away from home in their first pre-season friendly against Seaton Delaval.
Despite some early attempts from Seaton in the first half, Benfield worked hard going forward, with close chances from Dennis Knight and Paul Brayson just falling short at the final moment. Benfield's desire did not go unrewarded however, and in the 30th minute Jake Turnbull creates a perfect opportunity to slip the ball into Dan O'Reilly, who hits a top corner screamer, putting Benfield ahead.
Just moments later on 34 minutes, Benfield are back at it again, this time with Dennis Knight just missing out on a goal. Seaton Delaval show glimpses of chances during the final ten minutes of the first half, but it is Benfield that went into half time on top.
At half time, eight changes are made to the Benfield side, including the introduction of two trialists. The second half squad for Benfield picked up where the first half squad left off, and just 15 minutes into the second half, Cyril Giraud creates a 25 yard top corner screamer that is scored by Richie Slaughter, putting Benfield 2-0 up, and firmly in the driving seat of the game. Less than ten minutes later however, a Benfield defensive error allows Seaton some glimpse of hope back into the game, as the deficit was halved. 2-1.
With 15 minutes to go, Joe Robson comes off, making way for another trialist, and Benfield continue to see out their lead. The final moment of reassurance for the Lions comes in the 88th minute, with Cyril Giraud scoring a looping header, signing and sealing the game for Benfield, and securing a vital win for the team's preparations for the upcoming season.
The Lions will play Killingworth at home on the 8th August. Please remember that this is a strictly closed doors game, and no spectators will be granted admission into Sam Smith's Park during the game, but the club house will be open from 1pm. Newcastle Benfield FC would like to thank everybody for their cooperation during these unprecedented times, and we look forward to providing updates on Saturday's fixture as and when the game kicks off.
