Ryhope CW vs Newcastle Benfield: Match Report

23 April 2022

Having played Ryhope twice this season in the league conceding eight goals and only scoring once a tough game was envisaged for the Lions with a cup final for the winners of this match. The game got off to a slow start with nothing of note to report until the eighteenth minute when a fine cross from Ryhope’s James Ellis found team mate Oscar Taylor who saw his effort deflected onto the Benfield cross bar from a fine save by the Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger.

The game continued to be a game with both teams being guilty of giving the ball away but Benfield came close to the opening goal in the twenty-fourth minute when a ball into the Ryhope penalty area from Paul Brayson found team mate Dennis Knight who saw his first time volley just clear the Ryhope cross bar.

The half hour arrived and so did the first goal when Benfield’s Ethan Renney put over a dangerous cross to find Cameron Gascoigne who went up with a Ryhope defender with his header just glancing off his opponent and into the net to make it 1-0 to Newcastle Benfield.

Two minutes later and it could have been two goals for Benfield when Ethan Renney saw his first effort on goal rebound back to him but unfortunately his then pass to Ryan McGorrigan went under his team mates foot and out of play. The halftime whistle then went with Benfield leading 1-0.

The second half started with a quick break for Benfield in the first minute when a driving run by Dennis Knight ended with a shot on target well saved by the Ryhope keeper Jordan Harkness. Benfield were playing with confidence in their run to the cup final and came close in the forty-ninth minute to doubling their score after great play by Aiden Haley saw him pass to Ryan McGorrigan with his shot going inches wide of the Ryhope crossbar.

Ryhope were not looking like they would get a goal but came close in the sixty-sixth minute when a corner to the near post was met by Robbie Bird just going wide. Ryhope were to rue that miss as within four minutes Benfield added a second goal, a well-constructed move ended with a fine pass from Dennis Knight finding team mate Ryan McGorrigan who advanced forward to dispatch the ball into the Ryhope net to make it 2-0 to Newcastle Benfield.

Ryhope had nothing to lose with it being a cup game and might as well get beaten six nil as two so they started to throw everything at the Benfield and came very close in the seventy-fourth minute when a cross from Oscar Taylor found the Ryhope centre half Danny Lay who flicked the ball with his head on target only to see Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger bring off a great save.

Time was running out and Ryhope were pushing everyone forward but it was Benfield who came closest to getting the next goal when a pass from Dennis Knight put Paul Brayson thru, he then played in Cameron Gascoigne who rounded the goalkeeper only to go wide of the goal leaving a very tight angle from which he was unfortunate not to score missing a good chance leaving the score at 2-0 to Newcastle Benfield which was the final score.

This meant that Newcastle Benfield progressed to the cup final to play ASHINGTON at NORTH SHIELDS ground. May Day Monday Bank Holiday 2nd MAY KO 11am.

Man of the Match … Cameron Gascoigne.
