North Shields vs Newcastle Benfield: Match Report

Newcastle Benfield made the short trip down the coast road for their second derby match against North Shields in what was expected to be a tough game with the Robins being one of the form teams in the league. With having a recent tough game in the F.A.Vase which they unfortunately lost and a long late trip back from down south the home supporters were not sure what type of team would turn out after arriving back in the early hours of the morning.

The Robins started off the sharpest with the ball flying around the Benfield penalty area but with no real threat to the goal.

Although Shields looked the brightest, the early part of first half was a scrappy affair with both teams being guilty of giving the ball away.

In the sixteenth minute it took a good interception by Benfield captain Mark Turnbull to break up a North Shields attack after strong move involving Cam Cunningham who played a fine pass to team mate Dan Wilson. It was Cunningham again who was involved in the next North Shields attack when he went on a strong run bringing a decent save out of Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger.

Twenty-six minutes had elapsed when the first goal of the game arrived and it went the way of the visitors, a poor back pass from Brad Hird was pounced on by Benfield striker Paul Brayson who advanced forward to chip the ball over the head of the advancing North Shields keeper Olly Marshall into an empty net making the score 1-0 to Newcastle Benfield.

Play was then pretty even with the ball remaining mainly in the mid field area with both teams being guilty of trying long killer passes which were dealt with by both team’s defenders.

Thirty-seven minutes had passed when Ex Benfield player Gary Ormston gained control of the ball after it had bobbled around the Benfield penalty area to see his shot deflected for a corner. The ball was then cleared out to North Shields defender Andrew Cartwright outside the Benfield penalty area with his well struck shot just clearing the Benfield cross bar.

Halftime was approaching when in the forty-fourth minute a drive from Cam Cunningham caused confusion in the Benfield penalty area with his effort being cleared for a corner which was scrambled away with the ball eventually going for a goal kick. Halftime then arrived with Newcastle Benfield leading 1-0.

Only three minutes of the second half had elapsed when Benfield had a great opportunity to double their lead when goal scorer Paul Brayson put an effort wide of a gapping goal to the relief of the Shields supporters. Then only two minutes later it was the turn of the Robins to come close to getting an equalising goal with a shot from Cam Cunningham gaining a corner after a fine save from Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger tipping the ball onto the bar away for a corner.

Fifty seven minutes had passed by when a corner caused concern in the North Shields penalty area, a thru ball from Kane Evans found Dennis Knight who produced a swift turn to see his shot cleared for a corner which found the head of Benfield skipper Mark Turnbull who saw his effort cleared away to safety.

Two minutes later and a cross from Dennis Knight was controlled by Archie Leonard who struck a well hit shot into the Shields side netting. North Shields were starting to dominate the game and would have equalised in the seventy-first minute had it not been for Benfield captain Mark Turnbull who cleared the ball off the line away to safety.

With the Robins starting gain control it looked like an equaliser could come at any minute and it did come in the seventy-seventh minute, a throw in was squared to JJ Chrisp who drove a strong low drive into the bottom corner of the net making the score 1-1. Shields were now on top and in the eighty-third minute a cross into the Benfield penalty area found Dan Wilson who was unlucky to see his overhead kick go inches over the Benfield goal.

With two minutes remaining of normal time, it was the turn of Newcastle Benfield to come close to getting a second goal when a break down the right saw the ball find Paul Brayson who saw his well struck shot saved by Shields keeper Olly Marshall for a corner which came to nothing.

The game was almost over when in the third minute of added on time North Shields gained a corner which was headed clear to find North Shields defender Chris McDonald 30 yards from goal where he smashed a volley high into the Benfield net for a great goal which was the winner with the whistle for fulltime arriving one minute later with the Robins winning 2-1.
