Newton Aycliffe Preview!

Newcastle Benfield v Newton Aycliffe

FIrst Division Cup Quarter Final

Sam Smith’s Park

Wednesday 6th April 2022 - 19.30

Newcastle Benfield welcome Newton Aycliffe to Tyneside on Wednesday evening with a semi-final place in the First Division Cup the prize for the winners.

For the Lions this will be their third fixture in the competition, having already beaten Northallerton Town and Seaham Red Star on home soil, both by a 2-1 margin.

This will be Aycliffes second action in the competition having received a bye to the second round where they overcame West Allotment at their Beaumont Landscapes Stadium by 3 goals to 1, thanks to efforts from Jarvie, Shepherd and Ardelean.

Having put last weeks disappointing defeat at Whickham behind them, the Lions bounced back with a solid defensive performance in Saturdays stalemate with Bishop Auckland. Aycliffe who have had a mixed bag of results recently will also be looking to bounce back from Friday nights reverse at home to Northallerton Town, although sitting 6th in the table at time of writing, it’s certainly been a solid enough season overall for our visitors.

Although manager Col Stromsoy will only have thoughts on plotting a home victory, it will be a night of mixed emotions in the dugout as he goes up against his previous club for the first time. There will certainly be familiar faces in the Aycliffe ranks for Col having spent almost 3 years with the men from DL5 prior to leaving in November 2021.

With several senior players missing from the starting eleven last weekend, the management will be reviewing their options before naming the team but with some solid performances against Bishop’s, a number of decisions will have to be made.

The winners will face Ryhope CW away in the next round with the Northern League pencilling this fixture in for Saturday 23rd April. No matter what happens though, the Lions will travel to Ryhope CW this Saturday (9th) in a league fixture. Meanwhile Aycliffe will return to Sam Smith’s Park on Wednesday 20th April in our last league fixture of the season.

It is hoped for a decent crowd on Wednesday with this being the last chance for either side to secure silverware this season. Roppas Bar will be open from 6 and Snack Attack from 6-30. There will be programmes available from the gate (£2 each) and there will also be Golden Goal tickets available once you’ve entered the ground (£1 each).

See you there!
