Benfield vs Whitley Bay: Match Report

Newcastle Benfield v Whitley Bay 22 January 2022

EBAC Northern League Division 1

An intriguing game was anticipated in the first derby game of the season against close rivals Whitley Bay. With both teams recently appointing a new manager, it was a case of who could come out on top in their first endeavour against each other.

The game got off to a flying start, with a goal to the visitors in the second minute a cross from Jack Beverley was flicked on at the near post by Josh Gilchrist avoiding Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger and being put into the net by Matthew Coaley, making it 1-0 to Whitley Bay.

The lead didn’t last long however as in the fifth minute Benfield got an equalising goal, a throw in was dispatched into the penalty area with the ball falling at the feet of Benfield’s Connor Walker, who put the ball into the net from close range giving goalkeeper Daniel Lister no chance of saving making the score 1-1.

It was the home team who came close to getting in front in the ninth minute when a fine pass from Connor Walker put in Aiden Haley who saw his well struck shot well saved by Whitley’s keeper Daniel Lister. Whitley Bay almost got a second goal in the fourteenth minute after a mistake by Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger who dropped a bread and butter cross just managing to recover and clear the ball away to safety.

The seventeenth minute of the game brought the third goal of the game when a long pass down the Benfield left from Jack Beverley found teammate Malcolm Morien who cut in to confidently place the ball past the Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger to make it 2-1 to Whitley Bay.

Only five more minutes had gone by before the fourth goal of the game has passed and it went the way of the home team, a great pass from Connor Walker found Peter Glen-Ravenhill who crossed the ball to find the head of the inrushing Ryan McGorrigan, who saw his bullet header fly into the net making the score 2-2.

The twenty-eighth minute almost brought the fifth goal of the game when Whitley Bay’s striker Malcolm Morien was put through with a one-on-one situation facing Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger and after going around the keeper and just about to slot the ball into the net a brilliant tackle from Peter Glen Ravenhill rescued the situation for Benfield.

The thirty-fourth minute arrived with the fifth goal of the game and it again went to Newcastle Benfield, a corner wasn’t properly cleared falling at the feet of Connor Walker with his shot being blocked and bobbling about the Whitley Bay penalty area before arriving at the feet of Joe Robson who confidently beat a Whitley Bay defender before shooting home from 10 yards making the score 3-2 to Benfield. The last five minutes of the half could have brought a goal to each side, firstly a pass from Ritchie Slaughter found Paul Brayson who crossed to find Ryan McGorrigan, with his effort well saved by Whitley keeper Dan Lister.

It was then the turn of Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger to show his skills, when he made a good save from a Malcolm Morien half volley leaving the score at halftime 3-2 to Newcastle Benfield.

After all the goals of the first half the second got off to a scrappy start by both teams with an early free kick to Whitley Bay easily collected by Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger.

The fifty-first minute brought some more goalmouth action, when a great cross from Ryan McGorrigan found team mate Connor Walker who saw his well struck shot saved by Whitley Bay keeper Dan Lister and from the resultant corner Jake Thompson was inches away from making it 4-2 to Benfield with his effort going inches over the cross bar.

The game was starting to get scrappy with both teams being guilty of giving the ball away or making the wrong decision when in with good opportunities to get a goal. Eighty minutes had gone by when Benfield came close to a fourth goal when a rocket shot from 30 yards by Ryan McGorrigan just cleared the Whitley Bay crossbar.

The final decisive blow to Whitley Bay came in the eightieth minute when a terrific cross field pass from Connor Walker found team mate Ryan McGorrigan at the far post who did well to control a bouncing ball before slotting the ball home to make it 4-2 to Benfield which was the final score.

Man of the Match … Connor Walker.
