Benfield vs West Allotment Celtic: Match Report

Newcastle Benfield welcomed local rivals West Allotment to Sam Smith’s Park for the only Boxing day fixture in the Northern League, a large crowd was expected but due a cold wet Sunday morning it wasn’t as big as expected.

It was a scrappy start from both teams but it changed in the ninth minute when Benfield took the lead, Ryan McGorrigan went on a run before releasing the ball to Aiden Haley with his well stuck effort parried by Allotment keeper Finlay Hodgson unfortunately for the allotment keeper it fell to the feet of Benfield striker Ryan McGorrigan who tapped into empty goal to make the score 1-0 to Newcastle Benfield.

The game then plodded forward with nothing really happening of note but it was the visitors who were getting more and more into the game possession wise without looking really dangerous.

That all changed five minutes later when West Allotment got an equalising goal, a scramble in the Benfield penalty area saw the ball eventually fall to the feet of Matthew Hayton who placed the ball into the empty net making the score 1-1.

Twenty-five minutes had passed when West Allotment came close to getting a second goal, a corner was well defended by Benfield but when cleared the ball fell at the feet of Mikel Thompson who saw his well struck effort fly just wide of the Benfield goal.

With halftime approaching it was Newcastle Benfield who got the next goal a fine move involving a pass from Aiden Haley to Peter Glen-Ravenhill who then crossed to find the scorer of the first goal Ryan McGorrigan who crashed the ball into the top corner of the net for his and Benfield’s second goal making it 2-1 to Newcastle Benfield.

It only took a minute of the second half for West Allotment to get an equalising goal, a fine pass from Matthew Hayton found team mate Guy Bates who confidently placed the ball past the advancing debutant Benfield goalkeeper Niall Frampton to make the score 2-2.

It was the visitors who should have gone ahead on the hour mark, a long pass found Callum Larmouth who looked suspiciously offside but no flag went up and he was thru only to denied by a fine save from debutant Niall Frampton.

Benfield had a shooting opportunity in the sixty-eighth minute when after a foul on substitute Dennis Knight saw the him awarded a freekick which he took shooting wide of the goal.

The winning goal of the game came in the eighty-second minute and it went to West Allotment, Benfield’s Dennis Knight was disposed of the ball by Jacob Forster who played a pass to Matthew Hayton, after gaining possession he advanced forward to crash the ball past Benfield keeper Finlay Hodgson giving him no chance of saving making the score 3-2 to West Allotment which was the final score.

Man of the Match … Ryan McGorrigan.
