EBAC NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION 1
12/3/22 NORTHALLERTON TOWN v NEWCASTLE BENFIELD
This was the third match between the two teams with Benfield having won the two previous games but both games were close and this was anticipated to be the same in a game in which Newcastle Benfield gave a debut to recent signing Jamie Clark.
Northallerton were looking the sharpest from the first minute and good play from Alex Bruton saw him play a fine pass to team mate Michael Rae but the Benfield defence were up to the task and defended well getting the ball into the hands of goalkeeper Alfie Gordon.
Good play by Ritchie Slaughter in the twelfth minute saw his well-placed pass down the right flank find Ryan McGorrigan but he disappointed with a poor effort going well wide of the Northallerton goal.
A quarter of an hour had passed with both teams being guilty of giving the ball away in a game of poor quality. Twenty-three minutes had elapsed when a long thru ball down the middle of the Benfield defence found Alex Brunton who saw a good effort just go past the Benfield goal.
The first half soon came to a close much to the relief of the watching spectators as it was of poor quality by both teams with the score remaining 0-0 at halftime.
The second half got off a livelier start with a good move from Northallerton down the Benfield left flank which saw a scramble for the ball in the Benfield penalty area before Allerton substitute saw his shot on goal saved by Benfield keeper Alfie Gordon.
It wasn’t long however as within five minutes of the second half the opening goal of the game arrived and it went to Newcastle Benfield. A great move down the Northallerton left saw the ball arrive into the possession of Ryan McGorrigan who crossed the ball into the near post to see a deft touch by Ritchie Slaughter with the ball flying into the net giving Northallerton keeper Aleks Petrovic no chance of saving making the score 1-nil to Newcastle Benfield.
Two minutes later and it looked as if Northallerton had an equalising goal when a cross from the left saw Northallerton substitute Jack Stapley volley the ball home only for the linesman flagging and ruling him offside.
Northallerton were coming more and more into the game and it took good defending from Benfield defender Brad Varga to clear the ball from a Michael Rae cross. The home team were gaining in confidence in their quest for an equalising goal and it came in the sixty-fourth minute when a cross from the Benfield right wing found Northallerton Michael Rae Who finished with aplomb making the score 1-1. Northallerton were starting to get on top possession wise without really testing Benfield keeper Alfie Gordon.
Eighty-three minutes had gone by when a cross from Northallerton fullback Anthony Snook found substitute Luke Jones who saw his effort well saved by the Benfield keeper Alfie Gordon.
The game was petering out but with five minutes to go when it looked like Benfield had a great opportunity to get a winning goal, a thru ball put Archie Leonard clear on goal but he was brought down from behind by Anthony Snook when in a one-on-one situation with Allerton keeper Aleks Petrovic.
The referee Tom Maher having no hesitation in sending off the home team defender for denying a goal scoring opportunity, that was the last of any excitement of which there wasn’t much from either side and the score finished 1-1.
