Benfield vs Consett: Match Report

After last week’s defeat by Consett in the F.A. VASE Newcastle Benfield made five changes to the starting 11 for the return league fixture against Consett.

Both teams were feeling each other out and it wasn’t until the tenth minute that either side came close and it was Benfield, a long pass by Ritchie Slaughter found team mate Ryan McGorrigan who advanced forward to hit a well struck effort just wide of the goal.

Another eleven minutes quickly passed before anything worth reporting about occurred, a long through ball saw a race between Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger and Consett’s Luke Carr with the Benfield keeper just managing to clear the ball before clattering into the Consett forward, screams for a penalty could be heard all over the ground from the Consett supporters but the referee David Holmes denied this adjudging that the ball had been cleared and nothing could be done to stop a follow thru.

It was the visitors who were unlucky not to take the lead in the twenty-fourth minute, a terrific cross field pass from Jake Turnbull found team mate Ryan McGorrigan who after controlling the ball unleashed a rocket shot that crashed off the Consett crossbar and away to safety.

It was then the turn of Consett to come close to scoring twice in the space of three minutes, firstly in the twenty-eighth minute good control of the ball by Consett’s Luke Carr on the edge of the Benfield penalty area saw him hit a well struck shot saved by Benfield’s Andrew Grainger.

Three minutes later in the thirty-first minute, a small moment of controversy occurred when a ball down the line with Benfield players claiming that the ball had gone out of play but Consett’s Luke Carr was having nothing to do with whether it was in or out and hit with his well hit shot being well saved by Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger.

Things then really calmed down for the final quarter of an hour of the first half, with both teams testing each other out but not looking like either team would score and so it proved with the halftime whistle going leaving the score 0-0.

The Benfield defence had to be alert in the fiftieth minute after good play by Consett’s by Arjun Purewal saw his well hit centre dealt with by the Benfield defence.

Then just past the hour mark Consett were fortunate to get a freekick on the edge of the Benfield penalty area after Brad Varga was harshly adjudged to have made the slightest touch on a Consett player but to the relief of the Benfield players the ball went wide of the goal.

Things calmed down slightly but in the seventieth minute Ex Benfield player Kane Evans hit a low drive just past the Benfield post.

Seventy-eight minutes had elapsed when Benfield had a great opportunity to open the scoring a long cross field pass from Ryan McGorrigan found the usually dependable Dennis Knight who mis-controlled the ball missing a glorious opportunity to open the scoring. It was Knight again who was in the thick of the action and in the eighty-fourth minute a brilliant long cross from Benfield’s Peter Glen-Ravenhill found his teammate hit a volley into the side netting much to the relief of the Consett defence.

With one minute of the match remaining Benfield were indebted again to goalkeeper Andrew Grainger for making a brilliant save from another ex-Benfield player Dale Pearson who thought his header on goal was going to win the match for his team but thanks to the Benfield keeper who kept the scores level at 0-0 which was the final score at fulltime.
