Despite having home advantage, Newcastle Benfield were not favourites to win this battle against Consett due to the fact that the visitors have scored 59 goals and only let in 25, making them the second best on both situations in the Northern League and having the knowledge of how to react with them having recently been in the final at Wembley.
It couldn’t have got off to a better start for Consett as within five minutes they were leading, a long ball out of defence found Colin Larkin and with the ball bouncing in front of him he judged his lob over the head of the Benfield keeper Alfie Gordon to perfection making the score 1-0 to Consett.
It was then an interval of ten minutes before any real action came and it was another good chance for the visitors to increase their lead after a corner taken by Calvin Smith was put into the side netting, by Calvin Smith himself.
Twenty more minutes had elapsed when the second goal of the match came and again it went to the visitor’s fullback Oliver Smith played a ball through into the path of the scorer of the first goal Colin Larkin and he slotted the ball home for his and his team’s second goal making it 2-0 to Consett.
The first yellow card of the game arrived in the twenty-seventh minute with Consett’s Matthew Slocombe making a poor dangerous challenge on Benfield’s Aiden Haley.
Then it was just over the half hour mark when a brilliant run down the left wing by Abu Salim was ruined when he crossed the ball, with it going behind the posts for a goal kick.
Halftime was approaching when Consett got their third goal in the forty-second minute, a corner on the left, taken by Ex Benfield player Jake Orrell found Arjun Purewall who headed home making it 3-0.
It could have been four just before halftime after a strong run down the wing by Darren Holden saw his shot well saved by Benfield keeper Alfie Gordon keeping the score at halftime 3-0 to Consett.
Again it was the Benfield opposition who came close within three minutes of the second half to getting another goal when Luke Carr saw his well struck shot just clear the Benfield goal.
The referee Daniel Rawson was called into action when after a corner was about to be taken, he had to talk to both teams about the pushing and shoving with a yellow card a possibility.
As if it wasn’t already the game was put further out the grasp of Newcastle Benfield when in the seventy-first minute poor defending allowed Luke Carr a shot at goal, bringing out a good save by Benfield keeper Alfie Gordon, but the ball was parried out and another ex-Benfield player Dale Pearson followed up to put the ball into the net making the score 4-0 to Consett
It could have been more humiliating for Benfield when in the eighty-seventh minute when Jake Orrel saw his shot produce a fine save from keeper Alfie Gordon leaving the score at 4-0 which was also the final score.
