Ashington vs Newcastle Benfield: Match Report

Ebac FIRST DIVISION CUP FINAL

ASHINGTON F.C. v NEWCASTLE BENFIELD 2nd MAY 2022 @ North Shields

With all the league matches now completed this was the next best thing to win with both teams representing the Northumberland F.A. as well as the Northern League.

The match started off in sensational style with Ashington opening the scoring with only 30 seconds gone on the clock. A quick break away from the kick off saw Dean Briggs win the ball before playing a pass to Lewis Suddick and with the Benfield defence backing off this gave him the opportunity to find Paul Robinson who made no mistake in driving the ball past Benfield goalkeeper Andrew Grainger to make the score 1-0 to Ashington.

Despite being a goal down it was in fact Benfield who had the next shot on goal with Ashington keeper Adam McHugh making a good save from Dennis Knight. Play then for the seven minutes was pretty even with neither team harming either keeper but things changed in the thirteenth minute when Benfield captain Mark Turnbull was adjudged to have fouled Dean Briggs with the referee awarding Ashington a penalty which was confidently dispatched into the net by Lewis Suddick making it 2-0 to the Colliers.

Play was a little patchy with neither team dominating but it was Ashington who had a chance to go three up when Dean Briggs found team mate Craig Spooner who curled his shot just wide of the Benfield goal post. The thirty-ninth minute of the match had arrived before Benfield had their first real effort of the half when a break down the Ashington left wing by Paul Brayson saw his centre find Dennis Knight with his first time volley saved by Ashington keeper Adam McHugh.

Half time was approaching and in the second minute of added on time a good Ashington move saw a dangerous cross from Lewis Suddick well gathered by Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger leaving the score at 2-0 which it was at halftime.

Although not as quick as in the first half it only took Ashington ten minutes to get their third goal, Ashington had possession of the ball which eventually found its way via Paul Sampson to Paul Robinson who hit a terrific cross shot into the top corner of the net to make the score 3-0 to Ashington and his second goal of the game.

Benfield should have done better and got a goal back in the sixtieth minute following a corner when a fine cross from Cameron Gascoigne found the head of Mark Turnbull who headed wide from a good goal scoring position.

It was only a minute later Newcastle Benfield did get a goal back when the ball was only half cleared by the Ashington defence with the ball finding Benfield’s Aiden Haley on the edge of the Ashington penalty area who drove a low shot into the Ashington goal to make the score 3-1.

After working so hard to get on the score sheet it only took two minutes for Ashington to get their three-goal lead back, a strong run by Lewis Suddick down the right wing saw his pass find Dean Briggs who then managed to squeeze the ball past goalkeeper Grainger to make the score 4-1.

Ashington were then content to keep the ball and hold on to their considerable lead but in the seventy-sixth minute Benfield came close to a second goal after a four man move ended with Dennis Knight driving the ball over the Ashington cross bar.

Nine minutes later and it was goodnight for Dennis Knight after he was sent off for a foul on Jordan Summerly. In the eighty-sixth minute Paul Brayson had a half chance after good play down the Benfield right saw a cross into the centre giving the Benfield striker a chance to volley at goal but he took it down and was dispossessed. This left the score at 4-1 which was the final score with Ashington well deserved winners of the First division cup.

Man of the Match … Aiden Haley.
