Northern League First Division Cup Final
Daren Persson Stadium (North Shields)
Bank Holiday Monday - 2nd May 2022
Newcastle Benfield head to North Shields on Monday morning for the Northern League First Division Cup final against Ashington (11.00 kick off).
Col Stromsoy’s side secured their place in the final with a fine away performance at Sunderland Ryhope CW in last weekends semi-final. Having lost at the same venue only 2 weeks earlier in the league, the lads made no mistake this time around, as efforts from Gascoigne and McGorrigan sealed a deserved 2-0 victory.
The Lions have reached the final having seen off Northallerton Town (2-1), Seaham Red Star (2-1) and Newton Aycliffe (2-2 then 3-1 on penalties) before that victory on Wearside.
Ashington last played on Saturday 16th April when they secured a point from their final league game in a dramatic 4-4 draw at Consett. The result meant Ian Skinner’s side finished the campaign in 8th place. Meanwhile to reach the final, the men from Northumberland have been victorious against Thornaby (1-0), Guisborough Town (3-1) and Consett (4-3).
Col and his management team will be hoping for a clean bill of health after the semi-final and with no midweek match, it is hoped any minor knocks have cleared. This game will remain far too early for the lads on the long term injury list and their focus will now turn to pre-season. Ryan McGorrigan will be hoping to be selected as he comes up against his former club.
Meanwhile for Ashington, Luke Salmon has now completed a two match suspension and should be available.

Newcastle Benfield 0 Ashington 3 (Ross, Suddick, Salmon)
An afternoon to forget for Benfield and the Sam Smith’s Park faithful as Ashington secured a fine away victory and a league double over the Lions. With the lads having ended Ashington’s interest in both the FA Cup and FA Vase earlier in the season thanks to two excellent victories, this cup final is finely set up and delicately poised.
Our next game will be in pre-season ahead of the 2022-23 season. Please watch out for further information via the club’s various platforms throughout the Summer.
Address - Daren Persson Stadium, West Percy Street, North Shields, NE29 0LH
Entry - £5 / £3 concessions
The car park will be used by players and officials and therefore street parking is the option if travelling by car, however, please be mindful of local residents. If travelling by Metro, Meadow Well and North Shields stations provide access to the Daren Persson Stadium, both being approximately 10-15 minutes walk away.
North Shields have a clubhouse on site for pre and post match drinks, meanwhile other refreshments including hot and cold food are served in the ground via the canteen cabin next to the players entrance.
It would be fantastic to see as many supporters as possible making the short trip on Monday. The team appreciate the support they receive and it would be great to see as many Lions as possible backing the lads as they look to end the season with silverware.
