An important day at the Speedway!

There is a fantastic new partnership emerging between Newcastle Benfield FC and Newcastle Diamonds Speedway Club!

The Byker based club were welcomed down to Sam Smith's during our victory over Crook Town earlier this weekend, to signal the start of a fascinating and exciting community partnership, that will help to serve and improve the local Tyneside communities in the future.

Benfield vice-chairman Craig Bell commented: "Newcastle Benfield are really looking forward to working closely with Newcastle Diamonds and building a relationship that will benefit both clubs, the supporters and the local community. We want to build a positive partnership with the support of our sponsors Barrier Fire Protection who have played a major part in both clubs' growth over the years."

For those that are into motorcycle racing, or for those who feel inspired to pick up a new sport following the Tokyo Olympics, there is no friendlier atmosphere in racing than the atmosphere at the Speedway! This Sunday, the Newcastle Stadium will host its so-called 'Double Header Sunday Showdown', where 30 heats of racing will take place at incredible ticket prices starting from £3. The event will see the Diamonds take on the Poole Pirates and the Plymouth Gladiators in the so-called double header, and the day will start from 4pm at the stadium (NE6 2XJ) with gates opening from 3pm.

For some background, the club has certainly earned its stripes in both the distant and recent past, with one of the most famous riders in the world of the 20th century in Ivan Mauger becoming the world champion while he was a Newcastle racer. The club has also received a number of honours in both team and individual format, and has been the home to 4 individual world champions since its establishment back in the 1920s. Most recently, the club became triple champions in 2010, and one of the Diamonds racers won the Premier League Individual Championship as well.

Nowadays, the team race in the SGB Championship with 11 other teams, including Berwick, Edinburgh, Eastbourne, Glasgow, Birmingham, Scunthorpe, Kent, Redcar and Leicester, and the season usually runs from March until October. It is therefore a great time to take up the new sport, and start supporting the Benfield/Diamonds partnership, which promises to be brilliant!
